The occasion has been observed annually since 1933 as a way to recognize physicians for their contributions to healthcare. A medical doctor attends college for at least 12 years, and spends on average $200,000 on schooling. A simple "thank you" may suffice, but you should consider that your doctor may be the difference between life and death for you or a loved one. 

On National Doctors Day, you may show your appreciation for a healthcare professional in a variety of ways. Thank your doctor with a gift card to a theater, favorite restaurant or golf course. Traditionally, on National Doctors Day, a gift of red carnations would be delivered to your favorite physician, or placed on the grave of a deceased doctor. The carnation (Dianthus Caryophyllus) is a meaningful choice. A red carnation is used to convey admiration which makes it an apt choice. Daffodils, a member of the Narcissus family, signify respect.
