The History of Secretary's Day

Posted by Enchanted Florist on 21st Mar 2016

There is really no such thing as 'just a secretary.' Secretaries are the glue that keep offices together and the grease that keep businesses running smoothly. Their attention to the minutiae of running a business supports everyone in their goals. It is only right, then, that we set aside a day to acknowledge the hard work that they do. That is why we have Secretary's Day. However, they didn't always get a special day. When did this start?

The history of Secretary's Day actually goes back to World War II. The war caused a shortage of labor as men went to fight and women moved into jobs traditionally considered preserves of men. Administrative jobs became harder to fill. People filling them realized that they deserved an association, so they founded the National Secretaries' Association in 1942. After the war, people realized what a big role such jobs played in business success. The president of the National Secretaries' Association, Mary Barrett, thought that a national holiday would bring the recognition that secretaries deserved and encourage more people to become secretaries.

In 1952, Mary Barrett got together with the advertising company Young and Rubicam and the president of the Dictaphone company, C. King Woodbridge, to formulate a holiday. They and the association convinced the Secretary of Commerce, Charles Sawyer, to proclaim a National Secretary's Week and Day.

In 1952, Secretary's Week was the first week of June, and the day was June 4th. The day was moved to the last full week of April in 1955. In 1981, secretary's got the full week as Professional Secretary's Week, with the Wednesday of that week remaining the official day. People changed the name of the day to Administrative Professional's Day in 2000.

This year, Secretary's Day is Wednesday, April 27, and Professional Secretary Week is April 24th to April 30th. It is traditionally celebrated by giving the  secretary flowers and cards, and taking the deserving soul to lunch. If you know of a secretary in need of some appreciation, contact us. We have the right flowers for the occasion.
