June Flower Spotlight: the Hydrangea

June Flower Spotlight: the Hydrangea

Posted by Enchanted Florist on 14th Jun 2015

Description. The hydrangea is a large (from 5’ to 26’ tall), woody flowering shrub that are known as the “chameleons” of the plant kingdom, as they can bloom in white, red, pink, purple or blue, depending on the acidity of the soil. The color of the hydrangea can be changed by changing the pH level of the soil: soils with a pH of less than .5 produce blue flowers; soils with a pH greater than 5.5 produce pink flowers.

The hydrangeas offered at your florist, known as French Hydrangeas, come from Asia and South America and are grown in a controlled environment, so they bloom much earlier than outdoor hydrangeas. They are typically available from late winter to early spring.

Hydrangeas are native to the southeastern United States, require a lot of water, and are in bloom from spring to late summer or fall. Hydrangeas will grow in any type of soil, in sun or part shade. There are three types of flower blooms: The Mophead is the most frequently recognized bloom, having a globe-shaped flower cluster. The Panicle has long, cone-shaped flower clusters, and the Lacecap has a flattened cluster of round flowers surrounded by 4 or 5 large petals.

Meaning. In the language of flowers, the hydrangea has two distinct meanings. It symbolizes heartfelt emotions and expresses the giver’s gratitude for being understood. In the negative interpretation it represents heartlessness and frigidity, or sometimes vanity and boastfulness.

Toxicity: The hydrangea contains small amounts of cyanide and is toxic—though not deadly-- to dogs, cats, cattle and horses. After ingesting the plant, animals may display vomiting, depression and bloody diarrhea.

The Enchanted Florist in Pasadena, Texas includes hydrangea blossoms in a wide array of bouquets for every occasion, often in combination with lilies, roses, daisies or carnations. Want to express your unique heartfelt emotions? Please contact us; we'll help you do it with style and flair.
