Properly Console Your Friend In 4 Simple Steps

Posted by Enchanted Florist on 4th Sep 2015

Best friends grieve together. Tragedy enters our lives when we least expect it, and sometimes we take on the sadness of our closest friends. Though sadness is something of which we are all familiar, it seems we never know exactly what to do when a friend is grieving. Our intentions are genuine, yet in many moments we simply sit in silent support. Here are four things we can do when we just aren’t sure how to act or how to help.

Everyone Grieves Differently

The truth is that you may cope with sadness different than your friend, and you may feel inclined to share your methods or coping; however, remember that the grieving centrally belongs to your friend. Follow his or her lead in support.

Stick To The Truth

It may seem comforting to offer hopeful tidbits about the future like “it’ll get better later.” In fact, we can’t promise that. Stick to truthful statements even though the truth is pain right now - “I love you. This hurts. I’m here.”

Help With Simple Tasks

Often times the person grieving receives many open-ended offers like, “Call if you need anything.” Your friend may not call. You need to be proactive about helping with simple, recurring tasks like checking the mail or walking the dog. Be careful not to do irreversible chores such as laundry without asking first. You may be trying to help, but the dirty laundry may be the last piece of clothing that still smells like her recently lost spouse - you don’t want to accidentally take that away.

Bring In New Beauty

One of our favorite parts of being a florist here in Pasadena is arranging absolutely beautiful flowers to bring joy and offer a kind thought- albeit nothing to replace the sadness. Whether you take the initiative to arrange the flowers for the funeral or bring a small bouquet to brighten up a sad space, we believe flowers have healing powers.

Friends who grieve together, stay together. It’s as simple as that.
